What’s happening: Lake Superior State University has paired with Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) in Traverse City, providing a new path to a completed engineering career. Students who have completed their pre-engineering studies at NMC will be able to transfer into four engineering programs at Lake State. The program opens up the Sault Ste. Marie university to more students, especially for those in the northern lower peninsula who want to stay close to home to finish their degrees.

Streamlining engineering education:  The collaboration should streamline students’ ability to finish their degrees with computer, electrical, mechanical or robotics engineering in just an additional two to two and a half years, depending on the major. It also gives some students the ability to handle double majors in engineering more easily once all the prerequisites are completed at NMC.
The result is that students are able to finish their education much quicker, sending qualified local engineers into the field right away.

What they’re saying: “We are thrilled to solidify our partnership with Northwestern Michigan College,” said Dr. Lynn Gillette, Lake Superior State University interim president. “These articulation agreements not only streamline the academic journey for aspiring engineers but also underscore our commitment to providing accessible and high-quality engineering education.”

What’s next: Lake Superior State will continue to work with other community colleges to try and bridge technology gaps.
