At over 5,200 acres, the base’s massive size made redevelopment a challenge. However, several buildings have since been successfully repurposed, and a portion of the site now thrives as the Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport.
The desire to keep existing churches and historical buildings intact has motivated and inspired a number of Michigan’s 400 licensed brewery owners.
Most of the university’s buildings have been sold. Some are being renovated into apartments and commercial space. Others will become event venues and a community hub.
Administered by the Community Foundation of Marquette, a new fund will support maintenance of the popular Noquemanon Trail Network.
The Marquette Trail 50 is considered one of the Midwest’s signature ultras, famous for its rugged, challenging course and high peaks with views of Lake Superior. Those peaks are often the undoing of many runners.
