Aspirus, Inc., which owns three Upper Peninsula hospitals, announced it has a new leader.

As of July 1, Matthew Heywood will be the health system’s new president and CEO, replacing the retiring Duane Erwin. Heywood currently is the executive VP and COO of New Hanover Health Network in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Wausau-based health system covers north-central Wisconsin and the U.P., and includes Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, Aspirus Ontonagon and Aspirus Grand View in Ironwood.

Heywood earned an MBA at the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth College.

“Matt was the perfect fit for Aspirus,” says Todd Nicklaus, chairman of Aspirus’ board. “The health care industry is experiencing unprecedented change right now, and Matt’s skill set and leadership approach are exactly what the organization needs to succeed in an industry dealing with sweeping reforms.”
