Marinette Marine gets new combat ship contract
Western Upper Peninsula shipbuilding company Marinette Marine Corp. announced earlier this spring it has extended its contract with the U.S. Navy to build two additional ships.
Marinette Marine, owned by Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, has built four previous small combat ships for the Navy, and these two will extend its current contract through 2016, which will mean keeping the company’s 1,400 employees on the job and even adding some new employees.
“We are extremely proud and humbled to build these fine ships for our nation’s warfighters,” says MMC president and CEO Chuck Goddard. “The dedication and skills of our workforce are second to none. It’s no longer a Wisconsin secret that MMC produces some of the most technologically advanced vessels in the world. Through Fincantieri’s $74 million investment in our infrastructure and workforce, we continue to exceed the Navy’s demand in delivering two ships per year.”
