Editor’s note: The original date of the plunge — Saturday, Jan. 24 — has been rescheduled to February because of extreme weather conditions.

It’s time to take the plunge.

The Heikinpäivä Polar Plunge returns to Hancock after years-long hiatus.

Its return elevates Heikinpäivä’s role as the official kickoff to Hancock’s winter festival season, a days-long event celebrating winter and the region’s Finnish-American roots.

“This is one of those ideas that people have talked about bringing back for years,” said Brad Barnett, who is executive director of Visit Keweenaw. “Heikinpäivä is about embracing winter, celebrating our Finnish-American roots, and doing it together as a community. Bringing the Polar Plunge back felt like the most natural — and most fun — way to do that.”

What’s happening: After a hiatus of nearly a decade, the Heikinpäivä Polar Plunge returns to Hancock. The legendary winter rite of passage will be held from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. Saturday, February 7.

The tradition: The original concept in Hancock was implemented and run by Copper Country Finns and Friends, formerly known as Hancock’s Finnish Theme Committee. The return of the polar plunge, organizers said, elevates Heikinpäivä’s role as the official kickoff to Hancock’s winter festival season, blending Finnish-American tradition, modern safety standards, and the well-documented health benefits of cold-water immersion and sauna use. Rooted in sisu and community celebration, the plunge underscores what makes Heikinpäivä uniquely Hancock — it’s bold, a little wild, and proudly Finnish-American.

About Heikinpäivä: Created in 1999, the winter festival draws from the culture and folklore that followed Finnish immigrants who came to America to work Keweenaw copper mines. This January celebration (part-festival, part-holiday), is a Copper Country homage to Finnish-American identity and a mid-winter burst of joy and quirkiness to hearten the community through the long Keweenaw winter. Heikinpäivä hosts a bevy of events during a month-long lead up to the main event in late January. The headliner day features a parade with creatures from Finnish legend, the legendary wife-carrying contest, kicksled races, musical performances, cultural and craft-making workshops, and a traditional Finnish contra-dance with a live band.

Behind the return: While there has long been interest in reviving the annual plunge, the right combination of partners has come along to make the event happen again, officials said. The partners are City of Hancock, Visit Keweenaw and Takka Saunas / Small Craft. The plunge returns complete with saunas, medical staff and dive support.

“With the city of Hancock and partners like Takka and Small Craft, we finally had the right mix of enthusiasm, experience, and safety to make it happen the right way,” Barnett said. “It’s bold, it’s authentic, and it’s exactly the kind of experience people expect to see in the Keweenaw.”

Plunge details: The Heikinpäivä Polar Plunge will take place outside Takka Saunas off the Hancock Boardwalk. Visitors can change, plunge and warm up at Takka Saunas Portage. There is no fee to participate in the Heikinpäivä Polar Plunge but participants are encouraged to make a $5 donation to support Hancock’s upcoming Finno-Ugric year of programming. Attendees should bring warm, dry clothes and towels to get comfortable after their icy dip.

Apres-plunge: Partnering on the revival is Takka Saunas / Small Craft, which will offer free short sauna sessions throughout the event, giving participants a chance to warm up, change, and reset between plunges (waiver required). Small Craft (Hancock’s hottest new cocktail lounge) will also host Heikinpäivä-themed activities throughout the day, including curling and a growing European tradition of beer poking — turning the plunge site into an all-day winter gathering space.

Other support: The plunge will involve other partners for safety and logistical support, including the U.S. Coast Guard Portage, the city of Hancock Fire Department + Public Works, Michigan Tech’s “Aquanauts” Dive Team, Mercy EMS, as well as staff from Visit Keweenaw, city of Hancock, Small Craft and Takka Saunas.
