Gitche Gumee Cider Works opening in Hancock

A new cider house is coming to the Keweenaw, at least according to some initial reports.

Gitche Gumee Cider Works was approved by the Hancock city council to operate a hard cider brewery on North Lincoln Drive recently, according to the Keweenaw Report.

The company was first incorporated last year by Phillip Kelm, also owner of Gitche Gumee Brewery Services, and is located at 350 N. Lincoln Drive, according to the state of Michigan’s business license registry.

The report says the owners intend to use local Keweenaw apples for their ciders, creating a different flavor than the typical commercial hard cider. Plans include brewing for local bars and restaurants as well as possibly packaging for retail shelves.
