Coast Guard Foundation to build Sault community center

Sault Ste. Marie will soon be home to a new community center for Coast Guard members and their families in the eastern Upper Peninsula, courtesy of a charitable foundation.
The Coast Guard Foundation is a nonprofit that focuses on education and welfare of Coast Guard members and their families, and it announced it will build an all-inclusive indoor recreation facility in Sault Ste. Marie.
The foundation has raised $265,000 of the $400,000 needed to build the center, and has started a “Buy A Brick” program as a way for individuals, groups or businesses to help support the new community center. Bricks will be part of the outdoor landscape of the center and can be sponsored for $100 or $500 at different sizes.
The Upper Peninsula is home to eight Coast Guard units, on Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron, mostly responsible for search and rescue, law enforcement, aiding navigation, marine safety, and homeland security. The Coast Guard has about 600 employees in the area.
