What’s happening: Visit Keweenaw is accepting Destination Development applications until April 1, 2024. Houghton and Keweenaw County nonprofits and local governments can still apply to the program. The maximum award amount is $20,000.

What are Destination Development initiatives: Destination Development initiatives are generally focused on placemaking principles that leverage a community’s unique characteristics to enhance the experiences of residents and visitors. The aim is to invest in community infrastructure to improve a destination’s ability to attract visitors and create lasting, positive impacts.

What type of projects are eligible: Projects such as new trailheads, historical exhibits or interpretive signage to help guide people through area attractions. These types of investments not only benefit visitors, but they also contribute to the overall development of the local community.

Examples of past projects: The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club received $10,000 for energy-efficiency improvements to its groomer barn and financial assistance for a new barn. Additionally, $2,800 was awarded to Chassell Township for wayfinding and historic interpretive signs, and $2,300 was granted to Calumet Township for its new fat tire bike grooming equipment.

What they’re saying: “These investments have supported amazing community projects like beginner-friendly trails, downtown murals, signage and even emergency service rescue equipment. It’s been a great opportunity to partner with community organizations while enhancing the visitor experience,” said Brad Barnett, Visit Keweenaw executive director.
