"Getting into these sort of back woods areas, are really beautiful to see. You get to see wildlife, but also lakes and forest and bridges. All kinds of little things that you otherwise wouldn’t know existed,” said John Pepin, deputy public information officer for the DNR.
"This represents a significant investment in Michigan’s rural energy infrastructure,” says Brandon Fewins, USDA Rural Development state director for Michigan. “We are fundamentally transforming access to electricity in a large stretch of our state.”
“This is a monumental victory for the Upper Peninsula,” says state Rep. Greg Markkanen, who represents the 110th District. “Due to this investment, at least 1,240 jobs will be retained at the Escanaba facility.
“We have known and worked with WINN for many years. Its fiber optic network fills a void for us in central Michigan and we are very excited to add its employees to the PFN family,” PFN General Manager Scott Randall said.

Prominent artist residency programs in the U.P., including one at Isle Royale National Park, are seeking applications.
“Protecting the Keweenaw Heartlands is a global priority for The Nature Conservancy, and I am thrilled we finalized this purchase so everyone can enjoy and appreciate these iconic lands and waters forever,” said Helen Taylor, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Michigan.
