A Michigan couple's love for the U.P. and animals led them north, where they eventually established a zoo not far from the Mackinac Bridge. The GarLyn Zoo Wildlife Park, home to more than 100 animals, draws thousands of visitors annually and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
“Build U.P. was a critical piece of the puzzle in making this project happen,” said C.J. Felton, director of Real Estate Development at Community Housing Network. “We are fortunate to have a permanent loan from Central Savings Bank, but it didn’t completely cover our appraisal gap. The collateral from Build U.P. helped us close that gap and move forward.”
“We have had a lot of positive responses from the community and from tourists about the social district. The city thinks that this will be a great addition to our downtown area especially as we come into summer. Statistics throughout Michigan show that social districts increase the time that people spend downtown which in turn is great for business,” said Amy Zawada, director of Community and Business Development for the city of Houghton.
The Autism Alliance of Michigan has been a leader in encouraging clinics to create safe spaces by including sensory rooms.
“This support allows our island and local organizations to address pressing issues in our community, through education, mental health services, capacity building and more. We’re also pleased to be granting toward further housing opportunities for the seventh year in a row,” said Stephanie McGreevy, executive director of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.
“To me, it feels like we have finished starting,” said Mark Surrell, headmaster of Holy Name School. “We started three years ago with only two grades and grew year over year to now we have a full school with all four grades, double enrollment and our first batch of seniors.”
