A $4.6 million state grant is helping the much-anticipated Vault Marquette project move forward with construction. The downtown redevelopment project will transform an historic bank building into a boutique hotel and add a much-needed downtown parking structure.

“I know of no other fundraisers that generated this level of support from other local businesses. This is awesome,” said Marjorie Moore, secretary for Alger County Communities that Care. “This is so supported by the community, so we’ll tweak it a little to make it run more efficiently and hopefully get some more businesses involved.”
More than 20 Produce Prescription Programs operating across the state are helping people improve their diets by giving them access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Ishpeming is home to a new rustic campground. Named after a once-famous ski jump, Brasswire Campground also taps into the local mountain biking phenomenon. Campground trails connect to others in the region and are expected to attract bikers on overnight trips.
“From my first day here as the director, it has been obvious to me that our staff is just different,” said John P. Shealey, director of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center. “They take a lot of pride in the mission and are dedicated to the Veterans and family members they are serving.”
“It says a lot about Northern being an attractive option for students from near and far, and supports the value-added factor we work so hard to provide them while they’re here," said Brock Tessman, president of Northern Michigan University.
While the state faces an ongoing blood shortage, the situation in the Upper Peninsula is breaching critical. With a smaller donor pool and aging population, blood donations in the UP are lagging behind regional demand.
