"Inflation certainly played a role in visitor's increased spending, but shifts in lodging demand lead us to believe that spending in other areas, like retail and dining increased as well.”

Cruise ships are returning to Houghton and other U.P. ports. The Ocean Navigator will dock at the new Houghton pier on Thursday. Houghton, Visit Keweenaw and the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to greet passengers.
“Better than anyone, we know the views of the Straits of Mackinac are tempting, but we need customers to focus their attention on driving,” said Joe Shampine, maintenance supervisor for the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
“This feels like something I can do that uses my talents and gifts for the better on behalf of my country. It will be an honor to represent the Great Lakes region and its rural areas on climate change and other issues," said Jes Thompson, newly named to the National Park Service Advisory Board.
Laurium, a village on the Keweenaw Peninsula, hopes a software grant to streamline administrative tasks will also prompt growth.

“They’re kind of like what escape rooms use to be. Just because it’s new, doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s just a great time to have fun and break stuff,” said Myles Moncalieri, one of the creators behind The Rampage Room in Marquette.
