Giles named board Superior Health Foundation board president

“Serving on the Superior Health Foundation board has opened my eyes to the varied health disparities experienced across the Upper Peninsula. Many of our residents are facing challenges and barriers when trying to access health care and vital resources such as food, housing and mental health services,” said Sara Giles, board president of the Superior Health Foundation.

What’s happening: The Superior Health Foundation, a non-profit organization out of Marquette that is tied to many rural health initiatives in the Upper Peninsula, has elected Sara Giles as president of the board. Giles, marketing director at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, replaces longtime board member Dr. Dan Arnold as the board’s top executive.

A U.P.-wide foundation: The Superior Health Foundation handles the funds raised through the sale of Marquette General Health System to Duke-LifePoint. While the foundation has never been directly attached to the healthcare opportunities in Marquette, most of the money distributed by the non-profit went to health initiatives in the central Upper Peninsula. Giles is from the Manistique area, and she believes that making sure other U.P. counties apply for grants will help the region as a whole.

What they’re saying: “Serving on the Superior Health Foundation board has opened my eyes to the varied health disparities experienced across the Upper Peninsula. Many of our residents are facing challenges and barriers when trying to access health care and vital resources such as food, housing and mental health services,” Giles said.

What’s next: Giles, along with other executive leaders of the board elected at the same time, will work with the foundation to fund various health-related initiatives region-wide. Groups are welcome to apply for grants through the foundation at www.superiorhealthfoundation.org.
