The Innovation Marquette Enterprise Corporation SmartZone has a new part-time CEO, Ray Johnson.

The SmartZone in Marquette, a branch off Houghton’s MTEC SmartZone, is a new addition to the Upper Peninsula economic development scene and needed a leader to take it in the right direction.

Johnson certainly appears to have what it takes, with a 20-year resume including experience in starting up and later selling two tech companies, and a background in teaching entrepreneurship in Boulder, Colorado. He’ll be on duty five days each month in Marquette, focusing on expanding the local economy and supporting tech innovation in the U.P., according to the SmartZone.

“Ray brings considerable tech start-up knowledge and entrepreneurship skills in both on-the-job experiences and in academia. We welcome him to our community,” says IMEC chair Fred Taccolini.

Johnson has a business degree from the University of Notre Dame and has been named Colorado’s Cleantech Entrepreneur of the Year.
