What’s happening: Lake Superior State University has renewed and expanded its tuition partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes, building on a collaboration launched in 2009. The agreement continues to allow active-duty personnel, reserve members, civilian employees, and their families to pursue undergraduate studies at a reduced rate of $250 per credit hour — more than half off LSSU’s standard tuition and in line with the Coast Guard’s tuition assistance program. The benefits will also extend to graduate programs starting with this school year, making advanced degrees more affordable for Coast Guard members seeking to further their education and careers.

A longstanding partnership: Founded shortly after World War II, Lake State’s campus was built on the grounds of the former Fort Brady, a U.S. Army base focused on protecting the locks to Lake Superior. Coast Guard members and their families made up some of the highest demographics of students in the early years of the university. Lake State also serves as the USCG’s National Center of Expertise for the Great Lakes, studying freshwater oil spill response and marine safety for the region.

What they’re saying: “Lake Superior State University is proud to honor and expand our partnership with the United States Coast Guard,” said LSSU President Dr. David Travis. “This initiative reflects our mission to serve the Great Lakes region by investing in the people who protect it. Adding a graduate tuition rate strengthens our commitment to education, career advancement, and the well-being of Coast Guard families.”

What’s next: Both LSSU and the Coast Guard will continue monitoring the partnership in hopes of finding new ways to work together.
