Marine Trades Institute partners with businesses for high-impact giving
The Cedarville school hopes to build on fundraising success from last year.

What’s happening: The Marine Trades Institute in Cedarville has partnered with two local businesses, Soo Co-Op Credit Union and The Wicked Sister in Sault Ste. Marie, for a Giving Tuesday campaign. The collaboration will support the institute’s Student Enrichment Fund, which directly supports the career training of future marine professionals.
How it works: Building on last year’s success, Soo Co-Op Credit Union is again offering a dollar-for-dollar match for all donations during the week of December 1-7. All donations — whether made online, by check, or in person – will be matched up to a total of $1,000. Last year, the school successfully hit the $1,000 goal within days of launching the promotion, and aims to repeat that success.
In conjunction with the Soo Co-Op matching fundraiser, The Wicked Sister is launching a week-long fundraiser to drive support for the student fund. Throughout the week of Giving Tuesday, The Wicked Sister will feature a special burger called the Hot Ship Smashburger: stacked smashed patties, double bacon, double gouda cheese, habanero bacon jam and beer onions. A portion of proceeds from the meal will be donated directly to the student fund. The Wicked Sister is also collecting donations during the week.
What they’re saying: “The support from Soo Co-Op Credit Union and The Wicked Sister is a testament to the strong community belief in our students’ potential,” said Tom Coates, who is development director at the school, formerly known as the Great Lakes Boat Building School.
