Michigan Tech holds ribbon cutting for new residence hall
East Hall is Michigan Tech’s first new residence hall since 2010.

What’s happening: Michigan Technological University will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for East Hall, its newest residence hall, at noon Friday, Oct. 10. The new hall opened for the fall semester in August. It’s the first new residence on campus since Hillside Place opened in 2010. Planning for the new residence hall began in 2023 as part of Michigan Tech’s long-term Campus Master Plan.
Why it’s important: East Hall is a milestone in Michigan Tech’s commitment to supporting student success, designed with sustainability and connection in mind. East Hall serves as a new gateway to campus, ensuring more Huskies can live and learn on campus — a factor linked to higher retention, improved academic outcomes, and stronger community engagement.
About East Hall: The 126,000-square-foot facility adds 512 new beds and features modern, collaborative spaces that support Michigan Tech’s measured enrollment growth. In fall 2025, Michigan Tech welcomed 1,601 new students, bringing total enrollment to more than 7,400. East Hall features a variety of housing styles. Options range from semi-private suites to single-occupancy rooms, including accessible units that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Every unit includes a built-in bathroom, loftable bed, desk and dresser.
What they’re saying: “Serving as a gateway to campus, the new East Hall represents Michigan Tech’s ongoing commitment to student success through its innovative design and emphasis on collaborative spaces,” said Rick Koubek, president of Michigan Technological University.
What’s next: The ribbon cutting will be held at noon Friday, Oct. 10, on the East Hall lawn.
