A Keweenaw County manufacturer is expanding its operations with the help of a state transportation economic development grant.

Neuvokas Corp. recently purchased a vacant building in Allouez Township on the seasonal No. 6 Road. The rebar manufacturer will be building a larger facility to increase its manufacturing operations there, adding 31 new jobs and investing $1.58 million.

To help support the new development, the Michigan Department of Transportation is funding the improvement of the No. 6 Road in the amount of $136,911. That’ll go toward paving, shoulder and drainage improvements to bring the road up to all-season standards and allow Neuvokas to use the road to truck materials in and ship products out year-round.

The Keweenaw County Road Commission also is contributing $34,228 toward the project.
