Northern Michigan University listed in “2026 Guide to Green Colleges”
NMU scored a 91 out of 99 possible points, focusing on effective and realistic environmental responsibility.

What’s happening: Northern Michigan University has been recognized for its latest efforts in sustainability in The Princeton Review’s 2026 Guide to Green Colleges. NMU scored 91 out of 99 possible points, noted for focusing on effective and realistic environmental responsibility issues like a public greenhouse gas inventory plan, a sustainability officer position and a proper sustainability commission. This is the second time that NMU was named to the guide and improves on its 2024 Gold rating through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
Sustainable learning environments: According to a 2025 survey of college applicants cited by The Princeton Review, almost 60 percent of students want to attend a school that has a focus on sustainability. But those options are not always available at smaller and mid-ranged sized universities like NMU. In statements about the university in the Guide, Princeton Review editors called NMU a “green” university that would be the “best fit” for many students.
What they’re saying: “In a relatively short amount of time, NMU has demonstrated not only a commitment, but measurable action toward decarbonizing our campus. Ratings and reviews like this signify the importance of the work that we’re doing. It also recognizes that it takes planning and dedication at all levels of the institution to make a difference,” said Jes Thompson, who is NMU’s Associate Vice President for Sustainability.
WHAT’S NEXT?: NMU is continuing with grassroots efforts like student groups, green policies for its athletics programs and more. A campus sustainability tour and more information about NMU’s green efforts are available through the university’s website at https://nmu.edu/shine/sustainable-nmu.
