What’s happening: The Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) has been awarded a Rural Readiness Grant from the state of Michigan for the redevelopment of the former Winkler Nursing Home site in the village of L’Anse in Baraga County. The funding will support critical predevelopment activities for the Winkler site, including architectural designs, mechanical plans, cost estimates and renderings.

About the site: The former Winkler Nursing Home has long been identified by community leaders and residents as a key redevelopment opportunity. Transforming the vacant property into new housing will help address Baraga County’s ongoing housing needs while contributing to downtown revitalization and long-term economic stability.

About the funding: Administered through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity ‘s Office of Rural Prosperity, the Rural Readiness Grant Program provides critical resources to communities that often face unique economic challenges, ensuring they have the support needed to attract investment, create jobs and foster sustainable growth. This funding enables local governments, nonprofits and economic development organizations to implement projects that enhance infrastructure, build housing and health initiatives, expand workforce development programs and promote long-term economic success.

What they’re saying: “This project is a key component of WUPPRDR’s regional housing development strategy,” said Jerald Wuorenmaa, executive director of WUPPDR and a board member of the L’Anse Area Community Development Board. “We have heard many residents of the area express a need for higher-quality apartments and an interest in revitalization of the Winkler Building. With the help of this grant, we will do whatever we can to smooth the path to redevelopment of the property.”
