The Michigan Center for Rural Health holds its annual conference next week in Mount Pleasant. The two-day conference brings those working in rural health together to discuss a variety of issues in rural health, network and collaborate.
“Julia Petersen has worn so many different hats throughout her career that she was a natural fit to take on the project manager role for a multi-faceted project like the Keweenaw Heartlands,” said Helen Taylor, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Michigan.
Tribal members call the area “Anaem Omot,” which translates to “Dog’s Belly,” and is near archeological remains of indigenous burial mounds, dance circles and ancient agricultural evidence.
“The historic lighthouses lining our freshwater shoreline — the longest in the world — are part of the splendor of Pure Michigan,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said.
The electrification of the first Mackinac Island ferry is underway, part of a bold initiative to modernize the fleet and other ships serving the region. It's also part of an ambitious plan to bolster the economy of the Straits of Mackinac.
“Our goal is to help visitors better understand best practices to keep them safe while protecting and preserving the Keweenaw’s wilderness,” explained Brad Barnett, executive director of Visit Keweenaw.
Looking to save a piece of its past, Erwin Township found a way to serve the future as well. A preserved schoolhouse will be the centerpiece of a six-acre park, with plans calling for recreational activities and other amenities.
Three school districts in the Upper Peninsula will receive electric school buses, aimed at reducing emissions and improving the environment.
