Thousands celebrate U.P.-inspired holiday

What’s happening: Another successful Plaidurday is in the books, as the holiday specifically created to celebrate all things plaid had thousands of participants from around the world wearing their best crossing lines and patterns. Created by U.P. native and owner of U.P. Supply Company Bugsy Sailor, the event was popular with schools and businesses and trended on Facebook and Instagram. 
 
The biggest Plaidurday ever: The biggest celebration of them all was in the Keweenaw, where more than 1,700 people showed up in the hopes of setting the world record for most people wearing plaid. Members of the public joined students from Baraga, Dollar Bay, Hancock and Calumet to fill the Houghton High School football field, stretching 30 yards down the field. Tourists from Colorado and Florida came just for the event while other tourists extended their visits to participate.   

What’s next: Visit Keweenaw is in the process of verifying the record, with a complex system of wristbands, hand counting and more. Multiple camera angles were also available to help make sure the record is clear for the next group that wants to outplaid the Keweenaw.
