What’s happening: Visit Keweenaw and the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce have announced a new chapter in collaboration and community partnership: The organizations are sharing office space in the historic Leopold Building, 418 Sheldon Ave., Suite B, in downtown Houghton. Formerly the location of the Rhythm Bike Shop, the building was renovated by LJJ Construction and has been turned into a welcoming visitor information center and office spaces for both economic development organizations.

What it means: This move marks the Chamber’s new home and Visit Keweenaw’s transition from its longtime Calumet office to a more central, visitor-accessible location at the gateway to the Keweenaw Peninsula. Together, the two organizations aim to strengthen their ability to serve local businesses, residents and travelers while deepening collaboration between the region’s business and tourism communities.

About the building: The building was constructed in 1903. It was built for Nathan Leopold, who co-founded the South Range State Bank. The building was home to a department store and a bar at its opening and later evolved as one of the region’s top hair and beauty parlors. The corner location is now home to Citrus Salon, upstairs apartments, Visit Keweenaw and the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce.

What they’re saying: “We’re excited to begin this new chapter, not only in a new space, but alongside Visit Keweenaw,” said Katie Schlief, Keweenaw Chamber manager. “By working together, we can expand our reach, enhance our impact and even create more opportunities for our members and communities we serve.”

What’s next: To celebrate the co-location, Visit Keweenaw and the Chamber of Commerce are hosting a community opening from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21. The public is invited to stop by, see the space and enjoy refreshments. The space will be open regularly beginning Monday, Nov. 24.
