NMU students create own market for handmade goods

In the broader economy, entrepreneurs are a larger part of the workforce and business sector than ever before, and that’s being mirrored on a smaller level at Marquette’s Northern Michigan University

A group of students has created the Wildcat Market, where student crafters, artists and would-be entrepreneurs can sell art, jewelry and other goods in a walk-through marketplace each Friday.

Held in the University Center building’s atrium, the market is held from noon to 4 p.m. each Friday and is open to the public. The effort is backed by NMU’s student government, the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University.

“The Wildcat Market encourages students to gain experience with talking to customers and selling merchandise and gives them an opportunity to promote their handmade crafts or budding businesses in a real-world marketplace,” says market director Analicia Honkanen.
