“It’s a win for Western UP students and their teachers to gain real-world education applications and hands-on workforce training at an early, impressionable age,” said Spencer Lucker, who is director of Strategic Talent Initiatives for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
“It’s pretty exciting, considering this could be the first known cougar reproduction in modern times in the western Great Lakes states,” said Brian Roell, large carnivore specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
“Some tribal organizations were impacted more severely than others and are still recovering, but we’re fortunate to be able to reopen Kewadin’s doors and continue serving as a prime entertainment destination for the eastern U.P.,” said Sault Tribe Chairman Austin Lowes.

“This is great news for rural Michiganders who depend on (the United States Postal Service) for delivery of essential items, including financial documents, lab tests, prescriptions for veterans, and more, that are critical to the health and safety of residents,” said U.S. Sen. Gary Peters.

“We are all extremely excited, as these funds will enable us to get started right away with our renovation plans. We can’t wait to see the auditorium filled with people again,” said Sara Lahti, board secretary of Right Start UP.
"While we did not change who we are or what we do in pursuit of R1 designation, we are certainly proud to be recognized for the exemplary work our faculty and staff are doing in research and education, and we are excited for the opportunities that R1 status brings," said Rick Koubek, president of Michigan Technological University.
“The preservation and reinvigoration of this historic institution will allow the community of Iron Mountain to have a beloved space for gathering that also honors its cultural history,” said Paula Holtz, who is managing director of Regional Prosperity Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
“There is a huge need across the U.P. for skilled tradespeople,” said Mike Smith, who is executive director of the Upper Peninsula Construction Council. “The program is great because you get to work in the real world, and you get paid doing it. It’s a great way to get out and start a career.”
