Golfweek state rankings include 2 Upper Peninsula courses
Course rankings for golf courses across the country were released this spring in Golfweek’s 2010 annual rankings issue. Two Upper Peninsula courses made the elite cut as two of the top 20 best Michigan courses open to the public.
Thousands of courses across the country are played and ranked by more than 500 Golfweek raters to create the lists. They are rated on criteria that include feature shaping, natural setting, greens, variety, conditioning and maintenance, landscape management, and overall impressionability. There are about 700 golf courses in Michigan, although not all were rated by the magazine.
The Marquette Golf Club’s Marquette Greywalls course was ranked No. 2 in Michigan for Golfweek’s “America’s Best Courses You Can Play.” It has previously been No. 3 and No. 4.
Greywalls also was given its highest ranking yet among national courses, as No. 79 on Golfweek’s list of “American’s Best Modern Courses.” It jumped up more than 20 spots from 2009. Designed by Mike DeVries with dramatic vistas of Lake Superior, Greywalls opened in 2005 and has been listed as a top 10 best new course by several golf publications in recent years.
The other U.P. course ranked by Golfweek is the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris, ranked as No. 14 in Michigan’s best public courses. Owned by the Island Resort & Casino and designed by master golf architect Paul Albanese, the Sweetgrass improved its standings in the Golfweek rankings by six places this year. The course made its first appearance on the list last year as No. 20, in its first full season open.
Owned and operated by the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation, the 18-hole Sweetgrass incorporates Native American lore, historic bridges rescued from the region, and plenty of the course’s namesake sweetgrass.
“Earning a place on this prestigious list lets us know that Sweetgrass Golf Club is trending in the right direction,” said Sweetgrass Director of Golf Dave Douglas in a press release. “Our mandate is to provide an experience which golfers savor and value, and we hope this award will entice them to visit us and judge for themselves.”
