“Since the program started in 2022, we’ve been able to provide more than $100,000 in Destination Development awards to nonprofits and local government orgs in Houghton and Keweenaw County,” said Brad Barnett, Visit Keweenaw executive director.

A new initiative at The Shul seeks to provide more tools for Jewish community leaders to better offer behavioral health support to their community.
Two U.P. universities -- Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech -- are drawing more students, bucking a downward trend elsewhere in Michigan and across the country. What's drawing students? Preparation for well-paying jobs and the appeal of outdoor activities seem to be two of the most important attractions.
“Due to the hard work of our maintenance crews and some mild weather, we’ve been able to accomplish all required work ahead of schedule,” said Nicholas Pettit, maintenance branch chief.
"Our thrilling, sports-like challenges build students’ self-confidence and collaborative problem-solving skills and have a proven and lasting impact on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning and interest,” says the website for FIRST, a global nonprofit organization that prepares young people for their future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs.
“Every study that we've been able to find shows that up to 20 percent of the anxiety level is lowered in the school building just by the presence of a canine," said Tom McKee, superintendent of Rudyard Area Schools.
The U.P. Food Exchange has grants available to help farmers build hoop houses or similar structures to expand the growing season and offer fresh produce to residents in the Upper Peninsula.
