“Protecting the Keweenaw Heartlands is a global priority for The Nature Conservancy, and I am thrilled we finalized this purchase so everyone can enjoy and appreciate these iconic lands and waters forever,” said Helen Taylor, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Michigan.
“The bird chose me, you could say,” says Beth Maata, the only certified raptor rehabilitator in the Upper Peninsula (and one of only a dozen or so in all of Michigan).
“This robust investment will support Michigan Tech’s researchers, faculty, and students’ continued efforts to develop and deploy the next generation of technologies to recycle electric vehicle batteries that will guide the future of the auto industry in Michigan and nationwide,” said Rick Koubek, president of Michigan Technological University.
“People will be using these images for the next century and beyond to understand what life was like in the U.P. during the 19th and early 20th century. His work, and collection, is an important repository of the ‘Yooper’ way-of-life,'" said Dan Truckey, director of NMU’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center.
“As a homeowner a few blocks from the site, I’m thrilled to see this magnificent, historic building anchoring such an important development in the heart of Marquette’s downtown,” said David Allen, chair of the Marquette Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.
"The traditional territory of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community includes coastal and shoreline habitats which are critical places for culturally important species, foods, medicines and gathering,” said Debra Shore, EPA regional administrator.
The Nature Conservancy of Michigan has stepped in to protect thousands of acres at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. “This purchase ensures everyone can enjoy and appreciate these iconic lands and waters forever and assures that sustainable management of its lush forests continues,” the Conservancy said.
"It gives me great pride to represent the manufacturing community of the Upper Peninsula and to manufacture products here that ship all over the world,” Bob Jacquart says.
“The DTE Foundation looks forward to seeing how our grants and support come to fruition in our communities through these newly planted trees,” says Lynette Dowler, president of the DTE Energy Foundation.
Hoping to lessen the crowds at popular trails (and sell beer), Busch Light launched a campaign to promote lesser-known paths, including three in the U.P. Participants had to sign a non-disclosure agreement promising not to share trail locations or post information on social media.
