Transformational $30M state investment to build the future of tech and science at LSSU

Lake Superior State University is embarking on a transformative chapter in its history following a landmark $30 million Capital Outlay appropriation in the state of Michigan’s fiscal year 2027 budget.

This historic funding—the largest single capital outlay investment ever awarded to the Sault Ste. Marie institution—is earmarked for the extensive renovation and expansion of the Center for Applied Science and Engineering Technology (CASET).

What’s happening: Lake Superior State University has secured a $30 million Capital Outlay appropriation in Michigan’s fiscal year 2027 budget to support the renovation and expansion of its Center for Applied Science and Engineering Technology. The appropriation marks the largest Capital Outlay investment in LSSU history and a major milestone in the university’s ongoing commitment to modernizing campus infrastructure and expanding academic opportunities. The total estimated project cost is $40 million, with the state’s investment covering 75 percent of the budget.

About the center: Originally constructed to support the university’s growing science and technology programs, CASET has served as a cornerstone of academic excellence for generations of Lakers. Constructed in the late 1970s and officially opened in 1980, the facility houses classrooms, laboratories, and specialized learning spaces that provide students with hands-on educational experiences, preparing them for successful careers in high-demand fields.

About the project: Renovating and expanding CASET has been a top campus priority for years. The project will modernize aging infrastructure, enhance existing academic spaces, and create new environments that support experiential learning, research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. About the capital budget: In the newly passed, bipartisan Fiscal Year 2027 State of Michigan budget (enacted in July 2026), the capital outlay appropriation includes a massive $1.3 billion in total capital outlay project authorizations. This funding is distributed across 27 of the state’s higher education institutions (public universities and community colleges), with a direct state cost participation of $524.3 million. This capital outlay package is part of the broader $75.2 billion state budget aimed at modernizing aging academic infrastructure and strengthening Michigan’s higher education facilities to meet evolving workforce demands.
