A future secured for two Calumet icons
An anonymous donor has established two endowment funds with the Keweenaw Community Foundation to support the long-term preservation of the Calumet Theatre and the Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum.

What’s happening: An anonymous donor has established two endowment funds with the Keweenaw Community Foundation to secure the future of two treasured landmarks in Calumet: the Calumet Theatre and the Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum.
About the funds: The Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum Building Preservation Fund and the Calumet Theatre Building Preservation Fund will provide dedicated, long-term funding for ongoing maintenance, restoration, and structural care. The donor created these endowments to offer current and former residents, visitors, and history enthusiasts a lasting way to invest in the preservation of Calumet’s heritage.
What they’re saying: “These buildings are more than historic structures; they are community assets,” the donor shared. “They belong to the people of Calumet, and we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to steward them for future generations.”
About the buildings: Both historic landmarks are owned by the Village of Calumet and stand as vital anchors of the community’s identity:
The Calumet Theatre: Opened in 1900, this iconic venue has welcomed generations of performers and audiences, remaining one of the region’s most recognizable historic landmarks.
The Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum: Housed in the historic Red Jacket Fire Station (built in 1898), the museum preserves the region’s rich firefighting heritage through an extensive collection of vintage equipment, photographs, and artifacts.
What’s next: Community members, former residents, and visitors who value Calumet’s historic character are invited to contribute to either preservation fund.
