Michigan Tech hosts engineering challenge

What’s happening: Michigan Technological University is hosting the Eastern Great Lakes American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Symposium April 10-12, bringing student teams from 16 universities to compete in hands-on civil and environmental engineering challenges.

Background: Michigan Tech has a long history with ASCE competitions, including helping to launch the Steel Bridge program in 1987. MTU’s teams consistently rank in the top 10 nationally, and Timber Strong set a national record in 2024.

Public events: The following events are open to the public:

Friday, April 11

  • Concrete Canoe Races – 12–5 p.m., Ray Kestner Waterfront Park
  • Timber Strong Competition – 12–5 p.m., Gates Tennis Center

Saturday, April 12

  • Steel Bridge Competition – 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Gates Tennis Center
  • Concrete Novelty Display (Hockey Sticks) – 1–3 p.m., outside Gates Tennis Center
